“Who Has the Final Say?”
Bible Text: James 4:11-17 | Preacher: Rev. Dr. Lou Saldiveri | Series: Sunday Morning Worship | Intro: Too many times, you and I think we set our agendas and plans and God must put His stamp of approval on them. Truth be known, we probably don’t consider or consult God in the process. So,we can become very presumptuous and arrogant in our attitude with God without even knowing it.
I believe we need to be reminded that God is the Creator and we are His creatures. Also, I believe that we need to be reminded about, what theologians call, the providence or sovereignty of God. Please, don’t misunderstand. There is nothing wrong with good planning. But when we leave God out of the equation, we end up feeding our own egos.
James, in this passage, gives us some valuable insights about how we should view one another and how we should view ourselves and God.
1. Treat Each Other With Respect v. 11-12
1. Don’t violate the Royal Law
2. Gossip and slander are to be stopped
3. This is one of the most damaging sins in a church
2. Treat God With Respect and Reverence v. 13-14
1. We need to seek His will and counsel
1. Examples:
2. Matt, 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Mt 6:33–34
3. How many times have we made decisions apart from God?
4. We need to remember that life is short
3. Love God From Your Heart v. 15-17
1. Beware of sins of commission
2. Beware of sins of omission
3. We need to trust God’s timing
Closing: So, can we agree that God has and will ultimately have the final word when it comes to our lives and plans? Can we agree that we need to consult God as we make plans with the understanding that He has the right to adjust them or change them? Can we agree that God is the Creator and we are His creation?
