“How Do We Guard Our Heart?”
Intro: Last week, we talked about four spiritual heart conditions from Acts 8. When you and I put our trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ, we were given a new spiritual heart. The Holy Spirit lives in us. So, the question must be raised, how do we guard our spiritual heart? On this communion Sunday, I thought we need to take a look at a few key passages that give us practical guidelines about guarding our heart. Next week we will look at Saul’s journey in Acts 9. Proverbs 4:20-27We Need to Listen and Pay Attention v. 20Keep These Words of Wisdom Front of You and Within Your Heart v. 21Here is the reason: “They are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” v. 22Here is the key to living life well.Above All Else, guard you heart, v. 23The activity of guarding our hearts must be continual and consistentEverything we do comes out of our heartGood or evilWarren Wiersbe in his book, Live Like a King notes, “The eyes see what the heart loves. If the heart loves God and is single in devotion, then the eyes will see God weather others see Him or not.”The Practical Application v 24Keep your mouth free from perversity;Keep corrupt talk far from your lips.Gossip, slander, etc.Keep your eyes focused straight ahead on wisdom of the Word v. 25Give careful thought to your decisions v. 26Be unmoved to walk with GodIs God glorified by this decision?Doing the right thing is not necessarily going to be a popular choice in our cultureDon’t be distracted by evil v. 27Don’t walk the evil pathIllust: The heart is the “master-control” of the life; a wrong heart always produces a wrong life. To allow sin into the heart is to pollute the entire life… “The unexamined life is not worth living,” said Socrates. The Lord is pondering (examining) our lives (Pr 5:21, 15:3, Je 17:10, 2Chr 16:9), and we must examine them too (cp 2Co 13:5). Live in God’s Word and He will protect your path, direct your path, and perfect your path, for the glory of Jesus Christ. (Wiersbe’s Expository Outlines on the Old Testament. Wheaton, IL: Victor Books) Closing: As we come around the Lord’s Table, perhaps, privately, we can ask these words with a sincere heart, “Search me, God, and know my heart; See if there be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”(Ps. 139:23-24).
