“How Can I Pray For You?” Colossians 1:8-10
Remember, in the context of this wonderful book, Paul is addressing false teachings verse good Biblical theology. One of the keys to recognizing and standing up against false teaching is prayer. I believe if we are not careful, we can get in the habit of prayer which is rote and routine. We forget that when we pray in the will of God, He can do incredible things.
Heart felt, Spirit lead prayer and God’s Word are the most powerful tools you and I have in this life. In this passage, Paul gives us insight into the elements of effective prayer for one another. If we can understand and put in practice these elements, we will be able to identify false teaching and apply the truth of the Scripture to our lives so that we can mature from the inside out and live for Christ in every area of our lives.
Let’s explore some the the key elements of how we can pray and should be praying for one another.
We Need to Have the Right Attitude When We Pray
Speak to the Father about the Father
In true praise and adoration
This takes the focus off of us and rightly places it on our Father
He is worthy of our praise
He is our Father
He is totally other, yet knowable through faith in Christ
He is our creator
He Name is Holy
He is perfect holiness
We are unholy
We Need to Ask God What His Will is for us
We need to pray this for one another
We need to pray this consistently for one another
We need to ask God to fill us with the knowledge of His will
We need to ask the Holy Spirit to take the knowledge and give us all wisdom and understanding
We need the Holy Spirit’s help then to apply God’s will to all areas of our lives
