Facing Angry and Bitter People
Bible Text: 1 Samuel 18 | Preacher: Rev. Dr. Lou Saldiveri | Series: Sunday Morning Worship | Intro: Whenever there is dysfunction in a relationship or a family system, the only way that gets corrected is to bring an emotionally and spiritually healthy person into the system. This is exactly what happened when David entered the life of the very dysfunctional Saul.
When people are faced with a well adjusted person, they will tend to be jealous and bitter because they face their own weaknesses and failings. In this passage, God gives us valuable insights into how to face angry and bitter people. Here are four boundaries that David put into place under the guidance of God.
1. David Developed Healthy Relationships v. 1-4
1. Jonathan, King Saul’s son
1. Mutual respect and commitment
2. Open and honest communication
2. David Remained Faithful to God’s Calling and Will v. 5-16
1. David still ministered to Saul even in hostile circumstances
2. David was loyal to his calling from God
3. David Knew the One Who Gave Him Success v. 17-30
1. David remained humble
2. The Lord was with David
4. David Respected God’s Timing v. 17-30
1. David was surrendered and humbled
2. David somehow knew that God’s timing is perfect
3. David remained faithful over time
Closing: You and I will occasionally meet to deal with angry and bitter people. David gives us insight into how we can put in place healthy boundaries with God’s help in the power of the Holy Spirit.
