Chosen and Empowered Part 1
Bible Text: 1 Samuel 16:14ff | Preacher: Rev. Dr. Louis Saldiveri | Series: Sunday Morning Worship | Intro: Most of us can remember our first paid job. My first paid job was in 1968 working in a gas station. The minimum wage was $1.30. My job back then was making sure all the tools were clean and put in their proper places, learning who to do simple tune ups and oil changes, and last but not least, feeding and cleaning up after the station’s German shepherd.
Then I saw my first paycheck and I discovered that I had to pay this thing called taxes. It was kind of a shock. I did have a great boss. As he saw me do the little things well, he gave me more responsibilities and raises with those responsibilities.
In 1970, when I was a senior in high school and after my parents passed away, my boss promoted me to a higher position. He raised my salary to $4.00 per hour when the minimum wage was $1.45 per hour. You see, the more he saw that I can handle the smaller tasks, he slowly trusted me with bigger and more complex tasks. Here is the sequence, he hired me, trained in smaller tasks, then trained me for bigger tasks. So he chose me and empowered me to do that for which I was hired.
It is very humbling that when we come to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we realize that we were chosen by God. His choice is not based upon anything we can offer Him. It is based solely and only on His grace. The Bible tells us that you and I are chosen by Him and empowered by Him for kingdom work that God has ordained for us.
As we look into the life of David, God gives us precious truths about who He is and about who we are. Here are three great truths:
1. We Need to Embrace the Sovereignty of God v. 14-17
1. In God’s sovereign will, He will allow somethings in the life of a person
2. In God’s sovereign will, He brings together the sitting king and the new anointed king
2. We Need to Be Faithful to God in the Everyday Things of Life
1. Time
2. Talents & Gifts
3. Treasure
4. What are some of the things we experience or do every day where we can be faithful to God and glorify Him?
1. Marriages
2. Children
3. Employment or your profession
4. Commitments and promises made to friends and ministry
5. Excellence in school
6. Our driving habits
7. Self care
8. Showing respect to others
9. Are you able to name more?
3. We Need to Submit to the Holy Spirit in Everything We Do
1. Be Guided By God’s Word and Spirit
2. Be Empowered By the Holy Spirit
3. Be Faithful to What God Calls Us
Closing: We must remember that this is a constant and continuous journey. As we are faithful and empowered to do the small things to which God calls us, He will prepare us for something bigger.
