“Don’t Be Complacent!” Revelation 3:14-22
Intro: As someone who has been dealing with the public for a very long time, I often wonder when I meet someone who is serving the public in some way and has a very blah as they serve. Can you imagine going to a physician with a legitimate ailment and he says to you I really don’t care? Can you imagine a church who is made up of people who have been saved by God through grace thought faith in Christ and is very wealthy, have a beautiful facility, and by their actions, it seems that they have become so self sufficient that they don’t need Jesus anymore? As far as Jesus is concerned that is complacency which makes a believer so comfortable, they no longer have a desire for Jesus and the work of the kingdom. I believe it is easy to fall into trap, especially in the United State.
In this passage, Jesus addresses the church at Laodicea about the damage spiritual complacency will cause in a church. Notice that this the only letter out of the seven in which Jesus says nothing positive about them. Jesus wants to impress on this church that complacency is foolishness and sin.
Allow me to give you some historical background about Laodicea. It was very wealthy, from the manufacturing of black wool for garments. It was a city of beauty and commerce. It was a city where eye salve was manufactured to help people with eye problems. In 60 A.D., Laodicea was totally destroyed by a powerful earthquake. The city was so wealthy, they were able to rebuild with help for the Roman government.
